in the field that the father wisely unyoked his team and went home. At midnight that night Mary was taken ill and quickly sank into unconsciousness hovering between life and death for three days when she recovered rather quickly.
Mary's story: I was taken to the fort where there were feasting and dancing. Tempting dishes were placed before me but I refused to taste them because on entering I was told by a friend present there not to and that if I persisted in refusing food I could not be held. She also said a 'broom' was laid on the bed during her absence and there was great quarrelling about the giving of her to her parents.
Mary went to America immediately afterwards as her parents wisely decided it would be courting trouble to allow her live in the locality after her marvellous escape.
This story was told to my mother in my presence 55 years ago by Katherine Murphy (then 70 years ago) sister to Mary Murphy.
