    As evening came on the rain began to come down very heavily, and it was likely to remain so. It was no good waiting for it to clear up so that had to prepare to return.
    The young man seemed very much troubled at the idea of his best hat getting drenched, and he did not know what he should do.
    The man who was seeing them off said "Give it to me, Father, and I will be it into the well".
    The young man looked rather coldly at him, as if he were an enemy.
    The kind man said: "Do, Father, it will be perfectly dry".
    No use, he was not going to part with it, so he held it in his hand all the 9 miles home.
    The night he said to his friends: "Did you ever hear anything so stupid as that man, wanting to put my hat in the well to keep it dry". "Oh no", said they: "he was right. Of course he meant the well of the car".
