Muckish is named after its shape, it is the shape of a pigs back.

The big meadow, Carraigh Park, Minnie Diver's, The Scabby Back. There is a field in Horn Head near to the Bridge which is called Scabby Back, because every few yards the rocks can be seen clearly.
- The most usual time of the year for marrying in this parish of Doe is from 6th January until Shrove Tuesday. This season is called the "ranting" season. Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday are considered the luckiest days. The end of the week is considered unlucky.
