When cannon balls flew fast and loose
War served them as a fine excuse
To profit by each stock in store
All purchased months and months before
    When warring nations weapons drew
    How prices daily upward flew!
    How every kind of merchandise,
Twice per day in prices rise!
For everything we wear and eat
The present price all records beat
Of future profits, so it seems
They lately had some golden dreams
And built from out the poor man's fare
    Financial castles in the air

And one pound ten can bargains seal
    When people purchase Indian meal
From Antrim's shore to Mizen Head.
They were the first to rise in bread
And charged poor people at the rate
Of five pence per lump of 2lb. weight
And in this dear and griping hole
Two pounds per ton is charged for coal
And sugar in the daily run
Is forty pounds or more per ton
