  1. Through statesmen's tricks - or rather - crimes,
    War now prevails in many climes.
    For power ambitious monarchs fight,
    Regardless of what's wrong or right.
    And hostile armies in the field,
    Like devils fight no ground to yield.
    The very air with war is full,
    Some blame the Kaiser, some John Bull.
    And bloody fights are waged afar
    Hard by the frontiers of the Saar
    And million fought and thousands died
    Below the bleak Carpathian's side
    And as new events the days disclose
    To ..............prices of foodstuffs rose
    The town of Schull when at at par
    Was bad indeed before the war
    Each business dame and artful boy
    Charged prices full one-third too high
    Ye Gods! how prices upward soared
    When rifles cracked and cannons roared
