The winter of 1846 was terrible but still it was not too bad as the people had plenty of cattle and sheep to eat and they knew that they would have enough of food to keep them until the next summer.
The whole country looked forward to the summer of 1847 but blight came on worse than before.
With all the cattle and sheep eaten the people were forced to eat horses and they say even dogs. Thousands died by the roadsides and even those who lived after the famine died of sickness.not Local History(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)
