In the year 1856 (April) three young Englishmen (names unknown) believed to have been officers of the British army were visiting a young man of the country gentleman class at Dromineer, Co. Tipperary on the shores of Lough Derg, seven miles north of Killaloe. Henry Homles (people of his name still live at Dromineer) owned a fast sailing yacht. One evening the four young men visited Mountshannon on the opposite shore of the lake. It was almost night fall when they set out to return to Dromineer and a strong wind was blowing.
