It is declared to be an unlucky thing if the candle after lighting falls or goes out as it means trouble to the family.
To secure that the candle don’t fall, part of a large turnip is got halved and a piece cut out of centre large enough to hold the candle steady To conceal the rough candle stick the turnip is decorated with colored papers cut fancifully.
This is left lighting by some all night, by others it is quenched and lighted again on Christmas night and every other night till burned out.
