into Munster at the head of a large army. Passing through Holycross he arrived at Cashel where he proclaimed James Fitzgerald, the "Sugawn Earl", Earl of Desmond. In 1602, when the Munster garrisons had surrendered and the Confederacy was rapidly dissolving, Desmond's forces were defeated at Kil(l)mallock and their leader became a fugitive. With a price on his head, and accompanied by a small band of followers he was pursued from one hiding place to another, until he was betrayed by his kinsman, the White Knight of Kilbehenny. His capture was effected at the site of the Caves of Mitchelstown - about mid-way between Cahir and Mitchelstown.
(he was brought to London where he died in 1608).
