    In the year '47 and '48 the potatoes blackened in the ridges and there was a great scarcity of them. The portatoes generally grown were called "the leather boats". They were completely wiped out and it was then "the Champions" was first grown in this District.
    The people got them from "Lord Lismote," and through the "Board of guardians at Cloghen.
    During the Famine many people died of hungar.
    Two big strong able men called Glasheen died on the roadside near "Sweeney's" cross. they were said to be the strongest men in the District. The cause of the Famine was the failure of the potato crop.
    It was after the Great Famine that the Public Works
