Knocklofty, Clonmel, Co. Tipperary, is a townland where the people have many ways of forecasting the weather. Here are some of them.
When the hills look very near it is a sign of rain.
When a number of cows lie down in the fields there is going to be rain. People say they want to keep a place dry for themselves.
When swallows fly low and the crows are on the ground it is a sign of rain too.
When jackdaws and crows turn and twist in the air it is a sign of a storm.
When rheumatism is very bad there is going to be wet weather.
When one can hear a waterfall a long way off it is the sign of bad weather.
When the smoke goes up straight it is a sign of good weather.
When the seagulls come inland it is a sign of bad weather. When the flies fly low it is a sign of wet weather.
