- These were often built with sods and had mud floors. There is no account of one without a chimney. The roofs were often thatched with reeds cut in marshes and sometimes with straw. The kitchen always contained a settlebed and most houses have one still though few use them as a bed. A settlebed was used as a seat in the day time and could be opened out on the floor at night. It would accommodate three persons and was very handy in small houses. They were very warm and there is a saying that a person is not drunk till he falls out of a settlebed. The "tick" or mattress was filled with chaff renewed every harvest after threshing.(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)
