Some of the old customs connected with May Day still linger in this district. The following are some of them. The ashes are not put out on May morning. Red rags are tied to the cows' tails and to the horses winkers. These red rags are called "gads". They are tied on before twelve oclock on May Eve to keep away the witch-woman. Milk and butter would not be given as a present on May Day. It is believed that these customs came down from pagan times.- Collector
