    On the night of the 6th (of) January 1839 a terrific windstorm swept over Ireland and caused widespread havoc destruction and great loss of life.
    The gale blew from the west, straight of the Atlantic and the storm raged for a period of 12 hours from 12 o'clock at night to 12 o'clock midday. As the records at that time were very poor there is no accurate account of the number of lives lost, but it is generally beleived that they would amount to some hundreds.
