- Mixed farming was always the principal industry carried on locally. Flax growing was very extensively carried out about 100 years ago and this industry continued on until about 40 years ago when it almost died out. There were no flax mills in the olden times and the flax was completely manufactured at home "Beetling Mills" were very plentiful throughout the country and the flax was bettled at home and scutched by local labour.
