- Long ago, in this district the people used rush candles for light. They used to peal the rushes with a knife first. Then they dipped the rushes in grease of bacon. For lifting the food they used wooden spoons. They used wooden dishes for eating the porridge and sugar which was the food the food they nearly always ate. They used nothing for making their suits only cordary and frize. It was very rough cloth. Nearly all the vessels they used were wooden. They had wooden jugs, basins and bowls. They threshed the oats with a flail. When they were spraying they brought the bucket of spraying stuff up the ridge and shook it on the potatoes with a broom. The rush candles they had long ago for light were made of rushes. First they peeled the skin of the rushes with a knife. Then they dipped the rushes in grease and they let the grease dry around the rushes and then when they lifted them up they were stuck together and ready for burning. The people in this district made them all themselves. My grandfather Michael Hyland Pullabaun Cavan was able long ago to make(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)
