  1. Houses were thatched with heather in olden times. The heather was got from the bogs and mountains. There was a bed in the kitchen. It was generally placed along the back wall. It was called a settle bed. It was made of wood. It could be closed up during the day. The front of the chimney was made of clay and wattles. In olden times the fire was in the centre of the floor. I never heard of houses having no glass for windows. The floor was made of clay. Half doors are common in this district. They were for keeping hens and pigs from coming in to the kitchen. Turf was used for the fire.
Wood was used also. Rushlight was used for light at night. Rush candles were made in this district locally.
