    eighteen inches at the top. It was about three feet in eight. The dash was circular in shape with holes in it and of course made of wood.
    Into this circular disc was fitted a long handle. This handle was moved up and down through the milk till the churning was done.

  2. Hedge schools existed in this district about ninety years ago most of them were held in barns or fields and boys and girls of school age attended them. A man named McManus taught in a hedge school in Dernacrieve. The parents of the pupils paid him themselves. The pupils went to his house each day with two turf under their arms to supply fuel for the fire. The Government did not contribute anything towards the upkeep of schools or payment of teachers. Irish. English, Latin, History, Geography and Mathematics were taught.
    The late Parish Priest (Rev. P. O Reilly) dead now some eleven years was taught in his early days in a hedge school outside Cavan own and a chapel is now erected where the school once stood.
