  1. I have no churn at home, but I will describe one I saw in the country. The churn was three feet high, and three feet wide at the bottom, and two feet eight inches wide at the top. The sides were almost straight. It was about thirty years old.
There was a dash fastened in a long churn staff which was used to beat the milk. There was a piece of wood shaped like a saucer with the bottom cut away. This was put down over the churn staff to keep the milk from splashing up.
This piece of wood was called a "hoop". The dash was fastened with a pin and key to the spring handle. The handle was moved up and down and was very easily worked on account of the spring fastened to the other side.
Butter is made in this house three times a week in Summer, and once a week in Winter.
