The men had to dig their way through the snow to get food & as there was no way to get water they brought in the snow & melted it in the pots over the fire.
The snow remained like this for three weeks, & during that time a man died in Tullow. His burial place was Carnew & as it was impossible to get there his remains were kept in an outhouse & covered with straw until a bod yof men turned out & cut a road through the snow. When they were able procure a coffin for him they carried him on their shoulders the whole way to the burial place a distance of twelve miles.
