  1. The chief fairs for this locality are held in Cloughjordan; Roscrea; Nenagh; Templemore and Birr. Fairs once held in Dunkerrin, Moneygall and Toomevara have now been discontinued for a good number of years. In 1914, owing to an outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease in surrounding districts the Moneygall fair was temporarily revived. At one time Toomevara was noted for its bullock fair; but was abolished about a century ago owing to the workings of certain factions calling themselves "Black Feet;" "White Feet;" "Magpies;" and "Gurtalocks;" who invariably entered the fairs and caused disputes and fighting.
Many years ago the fairs were not always held in the town as they mostly are now. Crossroads were often the scene of bargaining for beasts and buyers still call on farmers and bargain with them on their land.
