- People never used to buy candles long ago as they do now.
They made their own candles from rushes.
The ruses were cut before they were crowned.
Then they were peeled with just a small bit of skin left on one side. There were dried beside the fire and then thoroughly dried they were dipped in a grease called tallow. Some people had not this grease and so they used ordinary grease. A special kind of candle-stick was made out of a block, and an iron rod.
