The Potato - cropPotatoes are grown on our farm at home and we set about an acre and this varies often.
My brother prepares the ground with a plough.
The potatoes are sown in ridges and in drills and six scrapes make a ridge.
The drills have to be ploughed twice before that can be made into drills.
Long ago wooden ploughs were used but they are obsolete now.
The spades are bought in shops.
The potatoes are cut in splits and covered with turf mould in case they would sweat.
It is usually the women of the house that do this work.
When the potatoes are sown they have to be moulded and sprayed and weeded. Then they have to be dug and picked and sorted by the children. Some people store their(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)
