  1. In this district most marriages take place during the period from Christmas till Ash Wednesday which is known as Shrove tide. The month of May people say is unlucky to get married in. Some people have different tastes and superstitions with regard to the day of the week. Some people prefer Monday and Wednesday others Tuesday or Thursday. But rarely anyone gets married on Friday or Saturday. Some years ago most marriages were brought about by match making that is a man or woman introduced a marriage between a certain couple. Then the man or intended groom wen to the girls home accompanied by one or more of his friends and if he liked the girl concerned and she liked him, and if he was found to have a suitable home farm stock etc and she had sufficient fortune or dowry the marriage
