Matches took place - usually in fields near Cross-roads for people came from all parts of the country to witness them.

Cullionbeg and Dalystown Cross were favourite meeting places. Teams were picked from both ends of the parish and the game started at 5 o'clock. There were 40 men in a team. Games were more or less rowdy - and no one went without his black-thorn under his arm for he was quite sure of a fight, as poteen was plentiful. It was made and sold by a Mr Molloy, who lived near the old brewery yard in Patrick St.

"Challenge Matches" were the cause of much excitement. One county challenged another and the game took place at the "Méaran" or boundary between the two counties. Each team tried to kick the ball home. These matches took long to decide and they often lasted from Sunday to Wednesday. Bonfires were lighted for the winning team, and they were carried home shoulder-high.
