The rushes were peeled and the people had a metal grissit which was used for melting lard in. The peeled rushes were put to steep in the lard for a while, then they were taken out and put aside to dry. There was a wooden candlestick used, and it had a little iron thing on the top like a pincers. Then the dried rushes were clipped into the top of the candlestock, then they were lit. When they burned down the clip was opened, and the rushes were put up higher.
   The floors in the houses were made of yellow clay and cement. The fireplace was situated
