Hay making is one of the most principal work of the farmer.
Towards the end of April the farmer selects the fields which he is keeping for meadow.
The cattle are taking out of them and the fields fenced.
Then about July it is fit to cut.
Long ago people cut all the meadow with a scythe.
Now it is done by a mowing machine. It is then left for a day if the weather is fine.
It is then turned some turn it with a Swath turner others with
forks. Then it is left to dry and it is put in rows of small cocks. It is left to dry better in this way then it is put into large cocks and the ground raked clean between each cock. There are two ropes put on each cock so that it won't blow about. Then it is drawn into the haggard and made into a large cock.
