- Long ago the people used to make their own candle. They made them out of the rushes which grew is swamps in the fields. They took the white (?) that was inside the green rushes. They would dip the rushes in tallow and let it dry. When it was dry the people dipped the white stuff a second time so as to make the candle thicken. They had a sort of candle-stick to put the candle in. It was made of wood with a pincers fastened to the top of a thin stick. When the candle wastes down as far as the pincers they would put candles up further.
