She ate the first fowl and not seeing her master coming she attacked the second. She had it almost eaten when she beheld her master coming running. He told her to make haste as the guest was near-hand. She gave him the carving knife to sharpen and told him that the dinner was just ready. The guest was just at the door when Grethel ran out to him and said "If my master discovers you, you are lost. He certainly did invite you to dinner, but he intends cutting off your ears. Listen how he is sharpening the knife". The guest listened and on hearing the noise began to run. Grethel ran in and told her master that his guest had bolted off with the fowl.
