    and three children behind an iron door in the cellar of the castle. He did this for fear of their being attacked during his absence. He was killed in the battle and it is said the iron door was never opened since.

    N.B. In 1921 the local volunteers made an effort to excavate the underground compartment and succeeded in unearthing the iron door about eight or ten feet below the surface. The work was then discontinued owing to its discovery by black and tans. It is locally believed that many valuables are hidden there.
