the black potatoes and strange to say they produced a good crop the following year. A story is told of one woman who gathered a bag full of the "peacógs" and sowed them - next harvest to the surprise of all she had as good crop of potatoes as ever she had in her life.
The people in 1848 ha no substantial food. They lived on "watery" Indian meal gruel and mixed with this were nettles, dockleaves, and turnips. The food "ran through" them and hundreds died by the roadside of hunger and disease. The disease was known as "Black Death" although the bodies of the dead were quite green - this was caused the people believed on account of their having no food but vegetables. When this disease entered a house no one would go into that house and the man of the house when he saw anyone in the house having "Black Death" used close the door of the house with stones and then all in that house died of the disease. Wolves were then in Ireland and they used eat the dead bodies.
Food has been plentiful ever since the famine years.
