Marriages were chiefly carried on in olden times during Shrove, This was usually a great time for people who intended getting married, Old men used go around from parents, who intended giving up their land to their sons, with "accounts" to girls who were supposed to be getting fortunes from their people, These men carried black-thorn sticks as the black-thorn was supposed to be lucky,
    If the fortune was suitable to the boy, and he and his place suitable to the girl's people, representatives of both sides would meet at some public house generally on a fair or market day, and here everything would be discussed and arrangments made
    Then the girls people had another day walking the land, that is they had to value the land and property, to see how many cows, was there good cabins, was the house good, Was the chapel, shop and school near, Where was the bog, was the turf good, Was the well near the house,
