- Shrove is the time of the year set apart for marriages generally in the Country. It is sorry to see the grand old custom of weddings and "ganders" dead.
When a man had money for his son or daughter he was on the (loock) look out of a farm of land about to be given up by a farmer to his son. Aman went between parties called a "speacaer" A meeting place in the nearest Village or place was agreed on. If the couple about to be married were unknown to each other they had to be present at this place, and if they liked each other the money was arranged and such questions were invariably asked "How much turbary? "is it far from the house. How far is the school, and Church and well. How many rooms how big are they. What living is the old couple going to keep. How much arable land, meadowing, grazing. Tillage. How long ago was the house thatched ect. A day is appointed to walk the land and if everything is as it was "painted" at the meeting place the match is declared made. and there is feasting for the remainder of the day.
