  1. Old Houses.
    The old houses in the district, as in many parts of this country, consisted of mud walls with a thatched roof. These houses were very warm and snug in winter, and cool in summer.
    The walls were generally about two feet in thickness, and yellow mud clay became as hard almost as cement walls of the present day. Mud is a bad conductor of heat, and consequently the heat was retained within the house.
    The roof was of wheaten straw, and sometimes long reeds which grew by rivers. Thatchers were very skilled, and when a fresh coat of thatch had been put on, a house presented a very pretty appearance.
