  1. In olden times people used to make their own candles. This is the way it was done.
    They got the fat of an animal and put it in a pot and melted it, dried rushes peeled and dipped into the fat and let dry and dipped again and again until the candle was made. Another way for making candles was to put a cotton wick into a mould and pour fat all a round it, when it was cooled it was taken out of the mould and hung on a nail to dry.
    In olden times people used to make their own soap also. It too was made from the fat of an animal. The way it was done was to melt fat and mix washing-soda and lime through it, when dissolved it was put into a tub and left to cool, then cut out into squares.
    There were a number of basket-makers in this district. The last one, "John St John," died about two months ago. The baskets were made of sallies switches. A thick one was taken out and bent into a circle then the lighter ones were woven in and out through the frame until the basket was made. They were
