    An old man stood by the gable side
    Of a roofless cottage home,
    The storm raged and howled around
    The wrecked and ruined dome;
    "Oh happy days I spent" he cried
    Within these naked walls,
    No comfort more than mine e'er smiled
    In yonder lordly halls

    The grass now grows about the spot,
    Where by a mothers knee
    I learned to lisp a prayer to God
    In youths simplicity;
