    houses and lie down and die. This was caused by the failure of the potatoes. In the year 1847 people had had a good crop of potatoes sown. When the potatoes were fully grown and the leaves were nice and green people thought that they would have the best crop they ever had, but instead about a month before they were going to dig them. The people noticed a black spot on the leaves, they did not mind it as they said that would happen if they had lighted a fire the night before.
