- The Penal laws were enforced in the year 1698. There is a story told in connection with the Vaughans of Golden Grove.
In the Penal Days priests used to be hunted, and if they were caught they used to be put to death. Many bishops and priests had to disguise themselves, to prevent their being put to death.
One day a message came to a certain priest in Roscrea to go out to Golden Grove. A man was supposed to be very ill out there. The priest went out, and when he got there he asked to see the sick man. The people told him the man was getting better, and did not need the priest. The priest said he would have to see the man. He went upstairs, and the man was in a dying condition.
