- I often heard my mother Johanna Downey, now dead, tell the following story about a hidden treasure. Her father pat Meagher who lived in Boula-ree a short distance from the village of Templetuohy dreamt three nights in succession of a crock of gold which lay hidden underneath a large flat stone in a grove convenient to Carrigh gardens on the Long Orchard estate.
On the fourth night he with a first cousin set out for the place about a mile distant. It was midnight when they got there and they set to work and unearthed the stone under which the crock was supposed to be. They deciphered some writing on the stone, which stated that a life would be lost in the event of the crock being taken.
They were considering what to do when an immense black cat made its appearance and sat on the stone. They got nervous when they saw the animal and returned home again. They often regretted afterwards they did not kill the cat and perhaps that was the life to be taken. The crock I daresay is still there.
