  1. This Legend is current among the peasantry of the locality.
    In olden days a malevolent
    supernatural light used to appear among
    the ruins of Barrig-O- Gunnell Castle
    and whoever had the misfortune of
    being the first to gaze upon the
    baneful blaze dropped down dead.
    The evil spirit that admitted this
    deadly ray of light took the form
    of a fire-breathing bull which
    ravaged the adjacent county until
    the arrival of St. Patrick. It's so
    happened that as the saint was
    journeying in the neighborhood on
    his little pony, the shades of night
    fell before he could obtain shelter
    in some friendly home. As he
    came near Barrig-O-Gunnell Castle
    the fatal light appeared and
    fortunately his Pony saw it first
    and dropped dead. But St. Patrick
    blessed the animal and it immediately
    came to life again. Wishing to discover
