  1. There were a great many small shops in olden times, but they were not together such as at the present. The most necessary things were sold in the country shops, or when the people would go to mass, they would get their supply after mass. It is not done at present. Money was not always given for goods. The farmers would give the shopkeeper so many stone of potatoes in exchange for articles, or the labourer did work for the shopkeeper in exchange for goods. Exchange in that manner was called "boot."
    Markets were held at cross-roads, and at present they are held also for fowl and eggs. Dealers in feathers and rags visited houses long ago, and gave a day's work for rags or feathers. They still come around buying rags, and they would pluck the geese and keep the feathers, and they would give four pence a pluck.
