  1. In the year 1177 Henry II King of England conferred the kingdom of Cork on two of his English Generals, Fitz Stephen and De Cogan. When Philip De Barry found himself successor to Fitz Stephen's great estate he built a strong castle near Carrigtwohill. In the 13th century when Hodnet came to the Great Island he built a strong castle at Belvelly: In the year 1329 the De Barry's became jealous of Hodnet. The De Barrys gathered all their followers both English and Irish and they were helped by the Roches from Fermoy, and together they attacked Belvelly castle. After a long, hard struggle the took the castle, because the Hodnets didn't know they were going to be attacked. Again the Great Island's name was changed to Barrymore.
