- In former times the people did not wear any boots until they were eighteen years. There were two people who never wore a boot named Charlie Conway and Mary Daly. The people of the present wear boots during the year, with the exception of the school children who come barefooted to school during the three months of Summer. It is said that if a person washed their feet they should throw out the water before going to bed. Very little boots are made locally but are always repaired.
There are three shoemakers in this district. In olden times there were two or three shoemakers in every parish. Clogs were worn long ago but they are not worn at present. Leather was never made in this district of sheepskin or untanned hide.- Collector
