  1. The Story of Castlefreke.
    Rathbarry was the real name of Castlefreke. In Cromwellian days there came to Rathbarry a garrison of Cromwell's army. The army was led by one of the Frekes. They marched to Rathbarry to take over the territory of the Barrys. The Barrys marched to defend their territory and they fought a terrible battle south of Rathbarry, winning the victory after a desperate struggle. Two years after, the Frekes returned to seize the Barrys territory again, this time with double the army. They fought all day long. The Barrys had almost won the day when another garrison of Cromwell's army came to the aid of the Frekes. They then defeated the Barrys and took over their territory. It is said that those of the Barrys who were not killed in the battle were drowned in Kilkerran Lake. The Frekes then built a new castle and enlarged the demesne by evicting all the small farmers who lived near the place. At the time of the defeat of the
