1. The Potato-Crop (ar lean)

   is time to do something to prevent his crop from the much dreaded blight. Accordingly he mixes blue stone and washing soda in the proportion of eight to six and dissolved in sixteen or seventeen gallons of water. It is then put into a contrivance known as a spraying-machine with a pump at one side and a long rubber tube on the other end. The pump is worked up and down, a tap on the tube released, and the blue moisture is sprayed among the stalks just as water is sprayed on flowers with a watering -can.

   The crop is sprayed three times during the Summer months, and in Autumn, when the stalks wither, the potatoes are dug out with a spade, if set in ridges, or ploughed out if set in drills. They are picked by the youngest members of the family and divided into two portions the small ones are reserved for animal use and the remainder stored in pits in the field or drawn home and stored in the barn or other out-house.

   Starch was formerly made from potatoes but at present it can be bought cheaper ready-made in the shops (ready made). The farmers help one another to set and dig the potatoes and what is known as a "meithel" is collected
