    There are many traditions relating to birds and their peculiarities. For instance the red breast of the robin is supposed according to one story to have been caused by a drop of blood from Our Saviour's mangled body as he stood at the foot of the Cross.
    Another story relates an incident of far-away Lapland where it is always freezing. A great fire was built there and was never allowed to go out whilst the one desire of a great brown bear was to extinguish it. A strange disease suddenly swept the land and laid the population low with the exception of one little boy who was left to tend the fire. This he did faithfully for many many days but eventually overcome with fatigue he dropped off to sleep. This was the chance the bear had been waiting for and he went and rubbed his great shaggy body over the fire until he thought he had put it out. But a little robin had been watching his movements and when he had gone the little bird alighted near the fire and seeing
