Strokestown's historical records are certainly rather dull, so, it is a relief to find that its traditions are to say the least of it rather startling. Tradition can even stretch back to the time of the coming of the Laday Casar. This lady had a company consisting of fifty ladies and three men. After travelling through Ireland the little band finally settled in Boyle. Four of the ladies were doctors and one Lapa was supposed to possess wonderful talents. This lady parted with the others and travelling to Strokestown settled there. A place three miles south of the town still bears the name of "Lapa" and is supposed to be the place where she is buried.
Next comes the time of Queen Maeve who had her royal palace at Ratheroghan seven miles west. The men of Ulster met the Queen's army at a place still called Battle hill, and here a fierce battle was fought. Battlehill is only four hundred yards from the town at a ford in the river. Quite close to this place is Cloonfree(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)- Bailitheoir
