When a person dies a wake is held at which chalk pipes known as "Forty Threes" are handed round. A quantity of snuff is usually placed beside the corpse. At the removal of the corpse for burial chairs and other articles of furniture are turned upside down. On returning from the funeral a pinch of salt is taken, which it is said prevents sickness.
The month of May is considered an unlucky month in which to get married. A wedding is usually held in the bride's house to which friends and neighbours are invited.
On St. Martin's day a fowl is killed and the blood is sprinkled on the four corners of the house for luck.
