He inspected the stone-room and he was surprised at the quality of the material there-in. The keeper told him that the mill was closed down and that no one would ever see tweed or cloth equal to that manufactured in Barkmills.
Besides woollen mills and flour mills there were also other industries which gave much employment arouound Barkmils and Mountmellick. England, Scotland and Germany failed to manufacture a water wheel and the task was accomplished in a foundry in Mountmellick. There was no foundry in England at that time equal to Mountmellick and at the present time there are mills in England worked by wheels which were manufactured in Mountmellick.
