was among the principal home crafts carried on through out Ireland and in some places is carried on still. The baskets for home use were of rough unpeeled rods and were used for carrying turf, potatoes and other stuff. they were very light and easy to carry. For market baskets and clothes baskets the rods were carefully selected peeled and boiled to make them durable and were often of a fancy pattern. Joseph Phelan of Windsor was a man who handled the rods with great skill but not for commerce al use. He died in 1918.
